ABOUT 1,000 DAGESTANIS FIGHT FOR GUERRILLAS IN CHECHNYA

MOZDOK, November 4 (AVN) -- About 1,000 Wahhabis from Dagestan are fighting for guerrillas in Chechnya, a source in the unified federal group in the North Caucasus told the Military News Agency on Thursday, citing intelligence data.

According to him, they mostly operate near the town of Vedeno in eastern Chechnya.

Meanwhile, federal troops continue to expand the security zone in this breakaway North Caucasian region. In the course of their advance, they meet resistance of minor guerrilla gangs which established themselves at fortified positions. After these fortifications are attacked by artillery and helicopters, surviving guerrillas retreat, but often leave powerful landmines, some of which are remotely controlled.
