KHABAROVSK, November 15 (AVN) -- The Yakut autonomous republic in the Russian Far East will begin construction of a railway to the Elgin coalfield in the year 2000, the Military News Agency learned on Monday.
Part of the works will be performed by a railway corps stationed in the neighbouring Khabarovsk territory, its commander, Lieutenant-General Yelgeny Kornyshin, told the Agency.
The corps will also continue construction of a railroad to the Agadzha coalfield, Kornyzhin said. It has already built over 10 kilometres of tracks, but the works were halted due to lack of financing, he added. However federal authorities promise to resume provision of money in 2000.
The exploitation of these two fields will also provide work for the famous Baikal-Amur railway which has mustly been idlyng in the past few years.
