PUTIN RE-ESTABLISHES SERVICEMEN'S SOCIAL PROTECTION COMMISSION

MOSCOW, November 22 (AVN) - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has signed a resolution re-establishing the governmental commission for social problems of servicemen, presons retired from military service and their family members, a spokesman for the Russian Labour Ministry said on Monday.

The commission will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko, the spokesman told the Military news Agency. First Deputy Defence Minister Nikolai Mikhailov is appointed deputy chairman, he added.

The commission is a coordination body which is to supervise activities of executive bodies in the sphere of social protection of servicemen, the spokesman went on. It has the right to set up interdepartamental working groups and public councils, draw in specialists for expert examinations and studies in the normatives of servicemen's social and legal protection, participate in the discussion of federal bills and hear reports of top directors and various officials.

The commission's decisions, taken within the limits of its jurisdiction, are obligatory for federal executive bodies and local authorities in the component parts of the Russian Federation.

A similar commission already existed in Russia several years ago, but it was later abolished. It was re-established on the initiative of Defence and Labour Ministries.
