RUSSIAN CHIEF-OF-STAFF DECLINES TO SUPPORT PACIFIC FLEET DIVISION

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, November 29 (AVN) - Despite heavy snowfalls which effectively halted air traffic in the Russian Far East, Chief-of-Staff Anatoly Kvashnin arrived in the Kamchatka region on Sunday to inspect Troops and Forces of the Russian Northeast.

Kvashnin arrived here from the Far Eastern military district where he had spent two days inspecting units of Combined Army 35 under command of Major-General Alexander Kutikov. He visited a permanent readiness motorised rifle regiment, stationed in the village of Yekaterinoslavka in the Amur region, as well as Fortified Area 2, located at the Bolshoi Ussuriyski island on the Amur river. He also held a conference attended by top officials of the Far Eastern district and other law-enforcement bodies.

Having arrived in Kamchatka, Kvashnin heard a report of Vice-Admiral Alexander Neshcheret, commander of Operative Squadron 16, took a closer look at personal and service life of strategic nuclear submarine crews and checked combat readiness of Motorised Rifle Regiment 304 of Motorised Rifle Division 22.

Kvashnin declined to support division of the Pacific Fleet into two equal groups, the northeastern and the southeastern, a source in the northeastern headquarters told the Military News Agency. Nevertheless, reorganisation of the Troops and Forces of the Russian Northeast will take place in the near future, he said.
