RUSSIAN NAVY PLANNING TO DEVELOP ITS BASE IN NOVOROSSIISK

NOVOROSSIISK, December 7 (AVN) - The Russian Black Sea Fleet is planning to further develop its base in the city of Novorossiisk in the year 2000, a spokesman for the base headquarters said on Tuesday.

Next year, the base will receive money for developing its ship stationing point near Geoport and setting up ground environment for storing arms and fuel, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. A total of 600 million roubles (about 22.6 million U.S. dollars) will be allocated for base development.

Special attention will be paid to anti-mine and anti-diversionist defence systems and hydrographic development of the district, the spokesman said. The base will also receive a minesweeper and several anti-submarine boats.

The measures are taken in line with the beginning of transportation of Kazakh oil through the Novorossiisk oil terminal. This project is implemented by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium.
