DIMITROVGRAD, Ulyanovsk Region, December 8 (AVN) - The service life of a local burial owned by the Nuclear Reactors Research Institute is likely to be extended until 2010, a spokesman for the institute administration said on Wednesday.
According to him, corresponding documents are already submitted to competent bodies, and they are likely to be approved.
The burial is capable of disposing up to four million cubic metres of radioactive waste. At present, it contains about 2.5 million cubic metres, and its capacities are not yet exhausted, the spokesman said. According to experts, and it can be exploited even after 2010, as only up to 700,000 cubic metres of waste will be buried here in the next ten years.
The institute is currently working on alternative methods of radioactive waste utilisation, such as vaporisation and solidification.
