RUSSIAN NAVY TO MODERNISE COMMUNICATION CENTRE IN BYELORUSSIA

MOSCOW, December 9 (AVN) - The Russian Navy is planning to modernise its communication centre in the Byelorussian town of Vileiki next year, a spokesman for the Navy communications department said on Thursday.

The centre is intended for retransmission of signals directed to ships and submarines in the central and northern Atlantic Ocean, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. During the cold war period, it played a key role in management of strategic nuclear submarines deployed in that area.

At present, the centre's status is regulated by a Russian-Byelorussian intergovernmental agreement. The centre is staffed with Russian Navy servicemen and Byelorussian employees.

The forthcoming modernisation aims to replace outdated systems of ultra long-wave radio stations adopted by the centre.
