MARITIME DIRECT-ACTION POLICE RETURN FROM CHECHNYA WITHOUT COMMANDER

VLADIVOSTOK, December 9 (AVN) - A direct-action police detachment of the Maritime territory has returned home from the North Caucasus, a spokesman for the territorial police department said on Thursday.

The detachment had been away for over a month, protecting communications, industrial and administrative objects on the Chechnya-Dagestan border, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. Its servicemen were involved in more than 20 mop-up operations and anti-guerrilla acts in eastern and southeastern Chechnya. They detained eight suspected guerrillas and spotted six caches with arms and explosives.

Unfortunately, the detachment commander, Major Konstantin Ilyushenko, was killed in a fight near the locality of Askai.

Another Maritime direct-action detachment, as well as a special police force from the town of Ussuriysk, are still performing anti-guerrilla operations in Chechnya. They comprise over 200 policemen.
