RUSSIA TO RETURN TO MEDITERRANEAN

MOSCOW, December 17 (AVN) - Chief of Navy Staff Viktor Kravchenko stated that Russian Navy is not intended to limit its presence in the world ocean by the Mediterranean sea.

One of national defence priorities is to re-establish this presence in the strategically important regions.

To re-establish navy presence in Mediterranean is the first practical task of 2000.

Navy plans to have there ocean zone ships including heavy cruisers.

The admiral did not confirm that Russia is going to modernise material support point in Tartus (Syria), but a source in the Navy Staff told the Military News Agency that the works are still planed.

Navy is to change berth communication system of the point and enlarge communication system abilities.
