RUSSIAN NAVY TESTING GROUNDS LACK FINANCES

MOSCOW, January 12 (AVN) - Navy staff has made a decision on enlarging and modernising sea testing grounds to test anti-submarine and torpedo armament, the Military News Agency learned from the Navy mine and torpedo department.

Sea testing areas will receive additional financing for that purpose.

Due to lack of finances about 30 scientific research, experimental and design works on anti-submarine armament were cancelled in the past five years.

Ladoga testing area was closed in 1998 for the same reason.

At present Russian Navy has only two areas for naval tests and both of them are abroad (in Crimea's Feodossia and Kyrgyzstan's Issik-Kul).

In 2000 Russia is going to test its Medvedka modernised anti-submarine complex and Shkval torpedo rocket.

However, in the nearest five years none of them will be sent for mass production first of all due to weak testing base and absence of special ships to run the tests.
