MAKHACHKALA, January 24 (AVN) - The eastern federal group has been rebuffing rebel attacks near the Chechen village of Vedeno since Sunday, a spokesman for the group headquarters told the Military News Agency.
According to him, guerrillas blocked in the Vedeno gorge are still trying to break away to the Sharoi and Itum-Kale districts, where large mountain bases are established. One of such bases was recently exposed by federal scouts near the village of Kiri. It even had a well-equipped surgical hospital for 20 persons.
Meanwhile, trench warfare is still in progress near the village of Serzhen-Yurt. Federal artillery eliminated two artillery squads here on Monday. There were no losses among federal servicemen, the spokesman said.
