KHANKALA, January 31 (AVN) - Federal forces attacking Grozny took control over the Minutka Square on Monday, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency.
By taking the square, the federals got a chance to mount their anti-guerrilla activities, the spokesman said.
The rebels themselves called Minutka the key to Grozny. Their defeat in that area has severely weakened their defence, the spokesman claimed.
Considerable rebel forces are still operating in the Leninsky and Oktyabrsky districts. However their defence system is effectively disrupted, they have no unified command and their resistance has become segmental and incoordinate.
The federals are currently setting up regimental command posts around the newly-captured square.
