OVER 1,500 RUSSIANS DIE IN NATURAL, MAN-MADE DISASTERS LAST YEAR

MOSCOW, January 31 (AVN) - As many as 1,236 emergency situations were registered in Russia last year, the Military News Agency learned in the Emergency Ministry.

As a result, 1,549 people were killed, a ministry spokesman said. However 18,063 people were saved thanks to efforts of the ministry specialists.

According to the spokesman, the total number of emergency situations decreased 19 percent compared to 1998. The highest number of man-made emergencies was registered in the northwestern and central regions where 1,149 people died. As to natural cataclysms and disasters, they are the most frequent in the Far East and the North Caucasus.

A total of 111 mass infections and poisonings were registered last year, the spokesman added.
