GUDERMES, February 1 (AVN) - Russian military prosecutors have initiated 207 criminal cases concerning offences committed by servicemen in Chechnya, the Military News Agency learned in the press service of Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Koshman.
In general, prosecutors are investigating about 1,000 criminal cases related to events in Chechnya in 11 districts of the republic, a press service official said. Over 500 suspects in grave crimes and involvement in rebel gangs have been arrested there. Some 7,000 people are currently kept in detention wards, he added.
The press service was asked to comment on acting Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov's visit to Chechnya which is to begin on Tuesday. In the course of his trip, Ustinov will deal with restoration of Chechen prosecutorial bodies, the official said. He will also supervise investigation into events which had taken place there in the past five years, including those which involve federal servicemen.
