EASTERN RUSSIAN SWAT UNIT COMPLETES COMBAT CO-ORDINATION

KHABAROVSK, February 1 (AVN) - A SWAT unit of the Eastern Interior Ministry troops district under command of Colonel Vladimir Nechvidov has completed combat co-ordination, Major-General Vladimir Romanov, chief-of-staff of the Eastern district, said on Tuesday.

The 400-strong unit was formed three months ago, Romanov told the Military News Agency. It is intended for special operations, including those aimed against terrorism. Its members have been trained for mountain and street fights by experienced instructors who took part in Chechen and Afghani campaigns.

The unit is not planned for transfer to the North Caucasus, but it is ready to accomplish missions there, Romanov stressed.
