60 REBELS ELIMINATED IN CHECHNYA SINCE TUESDAY

GROZNY, February 2 (AVN) - The main battles in Grozny are taking place near the cannery and the so-called presidential palace, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency.

The federals managed to take control of Gudermesskaya street in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny that connects the city with the village of Prigorodny by Tuesday evening.

The federal troops also managed to block guerrillas near the locality of Novaya Sunzha in the Leninsky district.

The federals occupied the city entertainment park in the Staropromyslovsky district, blocked the north-west part of Grozny's Tsentralny district outskirts and prevented rebels from breaking though to Alkhankala locality.

Federal artillery and aviation inflicted strikes upon guerrilla bases and camps in the mountains; about 60 rebels have been eliminated in the past 24 hours.

Federal troops are to continue accomplishing their mission in Grozny and in the Argun and Vedeno canyons on Wednesday.

Interior Ministry troops will block several localities and accomplish special operations; at the same time passport control operation that aims to find people connected with rebels is to take place in different districts of the republic.
