US DEFENCE STARTS QUALITY CHECKS OF RUSSIAN SUB UTILISATION PLANT

MURMANSK, February 2 (AVN) -- The US Defence Ministry delegation has arrived at Mukmansk's Snezhegorsk Nerpa shipyard specialising in utilisation of written-off submarines of the Northern Fleet, the plant's Director Pavel Steblin told the Military News Agency.

According to the US-Russian joint program on reducing armament threat the USA are financing the utilisation of Russian submarines at the plant, Steblin said. At the moment the plant is working on two Delta-1 class strategic nuclear ships.

Ron Alberto, head of the American delegation said this was a regular inspection. Quality checks are essential for continuing the financing of the programme, he stressed.
