MOSCOW, February 10 (AVN) - Russia's leading reporters have named Major-General Vladimir Shamanov, in charge of the western federal group in Chechnya, the Military Profile of 1999.
The poll is conducted yearly by the Profile magazine. Surprisingly, neither Defence Minister Igor Sergeyev nor other high-ranking military officials managed to make it into Top 5 of the weekly. The reporters gave their preferences to those who have distinguished themselves in the Chechnya campaign.
They named acting President Vladimir Putin Political Profile of the Year, Central Bank Chairman Viktor Gerashchenko Official Profile, head of the Unified Energy System of Russia Anatoly Chubais Business Profile and Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov Regional Profile. Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II was unanimously named Manager of the Year.
The winners received their awards at a ceremony in Moscow's Marriott Grand Hotel on Wednesday. General Shamanov, who is currently in Chechnya, was represented by his son Yuri, cadet of the Military University.
