MOSCOW, February 11 (AVN) -- Deputy Chief-of-Staff Valery Manilov announced the offical figures of losses of the federal troops in the North Caucasus at a news-briefing in the Russian Information Centre on Friday.

According to Manilov, since August 2 last year 1,458 servicemen were killed (970 of the Defence Ministry and 488 of the Interior Ministry) and 4,495 wounded (2,706 of the Defence Ministry and 1,789 of the Interior Ministry).

In the course of the second phase of the operation 1,275 servicemen were killed (849 of the Defence and 326 of the Interior) and 3,544 wounded (2,424 of the Defence and 1,120 of the Interior).

Manilov also added that during the operation on liberating Grozny a refrigerator wagon was detected at the city railway station containing some 150 bodies. Currently the bodies are being sent to the laboratory in Rostov-on-Don (Southern Russia) where the specialists will have to find out when these people died.

It is possible that they have been killed already in the previous campaign of 1994-1996, however nothing can be said before the investigation is over, Manilov stressed.
