KAMCHATKA GETTING READY FOR DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 14 (AVN) - Officers of the Emergency Ministry Kamchatka regional department were set on alert on Monday to react to consequences of an earthquake which rocked the peninsula earlier in the day, a department spokesman told the Military News Agency.

It is the third earthquake registered here this month. A quake measuring two points on the Richter scale was registered 110km west of the regional centre on February 4. Another quake occurred in the Kronotsky bay on February 10. The epicentre of the latest quake was located 45km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The regional department of the federal earthquake and volcanic eruption forecast centre does not expect quakes measuring over seven points this week. However Kamchatka residents still remember a 15-year-old prediction saying a devastating earthquake will take place in the peninsula in the winter or spring of 2000.
