CHECHNYA BORDER OUTPOSTS HALT WORK TO PREVENT TERRORIST ACTS

GROZNY, February 15 (AVN) - Temporary breaks in the work of checkpoints on the Chechnya-Ingushetia border are caused by operative situation, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters said on Tuesday.

The federal command has learned that Chechen rebels are planning large-scale terrorist acts near the checkpoints, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. The recent militant invasion in the Gekhi-Chu village confirms the warlords' intention to start an active stage of guerrilla warfare against the federals.

Mobile militant gangs which are concentrating near the localities of Khatuni, Kirov-Yurt, Makkhety, and Ageshty are also likely to be assigned to this mission. They mostly comprise Dagestani Wahhabis and mercenaries.

According to military estimations, currently some 4,500 to 7,000 rebels are defending Chechnya's non-liberated districts.
