MONINO, Moscow Region, March 29 (AVN) - The Gagarin Military Academy is commemorating its 60th anniversary Wednesday, a source in the Air Force staff told the Military News Agency.
The Academy was opened in the Moscow region's village of Monino as Air Foce command and navigation academy of the Red Army on an order of the defence chief on March 29, 1940. Over 23,000 military pilots and navigators have been educated here. Quite the same number of officers has ended re-training courses here.
Among the graduates of the Academy are about 700 Heroes of Russia and Soviet Union, 39 of them were conferred the title twice, one - three times. 23 graduates of the Academy have become cosmonauts. Apart from that the Academy prepared over 2,500 aviation commanders for more than 20 countries' Air Forces.
Commemorating activities will be held here Wednesday. They will be attended by Air Force Commander Anatoly Kornukov, representatives of the presidential administration and the Russian government.
