DM TO SUPERVISE SOUTHERN SHIELD OF COMMONWEALTH 2000 TRAINING

MINSK, March 31 (AVN) - Russian Defence Minister Igor Sergeyev will arrive in the area of the Southern Shield of the Commonwealth 2000 coalition training of the Collective Security Treaty countries and Uzbekistan on April 2, a source in the CIS military co-operation co-ordination staff told the Military News Agency.

Sergeyev will take part in the most active phase of the exercise, when combat firing will be trained, the source added.

The training has been held in the territory of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan since Tuesday. Military command bodies and forces of Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are taking part. Operative groups of Armenian and Belarussian Defence Ministries are present at the exercise. Lieutenant-General Leonid Maltsev, CIS military co-operation co-ordination staff deputy chief is administering the training, which will end April 3.
