KHANKALA, April 3 (AVN) - The problem with clean potable water still remains in Chechnya as seen from the recent typhus outbreak in the locality of Lermontov-Yurt, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency Monday.
A danger of new epidemics is present in over 30 villages of the turbulent republic, the spokesman stressed.
Back in 1995-1997 there already were typhus and other infections outbreaks in Chechnya. The situation is complicated because of oil pollution, the spokesman added.
According to the military data, large pollution zones have been exposed in the area of Staro-Sunzhensky and Chernorechensky water intake. Weather forecasts say the high waters will start already in mid-April. At the same time, the measures taken to prevent the pollution of the Terek and Sunzha with oil products do not seem to be efficient.
It is expected to drill 10 wells of up to 450m deep, but the development of Chechnya's ground waters has not started yet.
The spring high floods might also lead to a long-term pollution of agricultural areas in Chechnya and adjacent Dagestan.
