REBEL LEADERS RESTORING CENTRALISED COMMAND IN CHECHNYA

KHANKALA, April 4 (AVN) - Separatists unleashed several attacks on the federal location points in Chechnya overnight to Tuesday, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency.

A federal outpost and a checkpoint were attacked in Grozny's Oktyabrsky district. The vehicle, which had been used for the attack, was eliminated. The rebels also inflicted strikes at a checkpoint in the vicinity of Aleroi, an Interior Ministry troops unit in Galaity and an outpost in Chervlyonaya, the spokesman said.

According to him, currently several gangs totalling some 1,000 guerrillas are deployed in the southern-eastern districts of the turbulent republic. The rebels are regrouping and re-establishing combat readiness. The gangs are commanded from a mobile staff, headed by prominent warlords Shamil Basayev and Khattab. Separatists are constantly launching misinformation concerning the location of this staff to confuse the federals.

In accordance with the federal command, the extremists have largely managed to restore centralised command over the troops, including their agents in the so-called "liberated districts" of the republic.

The rebel leaders are using radio interception for obtaining the information concerning the location, number and routes of the federal detachments. Several attempts of sabotage and raids were detected by the federals as well.

In order to suppress such attempts federal aviation and artillery hammered the rebel installations and routes in the vicinity of Serzhen-Yurt, Benoi-Vedeno, and Roshni-Chu.

According to preliminary data, 30 rebels, 22 funk holes, and two ammo caches were eliminated as a result of the strikes.
