FEDERALS TO MINE 80KM OF CHECHNYA-GEORGIA BORDER

KHANKALA, April 11 (AVN) - The 80km-long section of the Russia-Georgia border adjacent to the southern Chechen Argun gorge will be protected by mine belts, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters said on Tuesday.

The reason behind this decision is that the border lies at glaciers about 3,000 metres above the sea level, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. Its provision with engineering facilities would take a lot of time and money, he added.

Specialists of the Federal Border Guard Service and sappers of the unified federal group will mine over 20 mountain passes and dozens of pathways to cut routes for rebel retreat to Georgia. The works will be covered by federal airborne units.
