EMERGENCY MINISTRY INSPECTS MURMANSK REGION CIVIL DEFENCE

MURMANSK, April 21 (AVN) - Large-scale civil defence exercises on relief works for liquidating the aftermath of man-made disasters have ended in the Murmansk region, a source in the regional civil defence and emergency situations department told the Military News Agency.

The exercise was held within the frames of the Emergency Ministry planned inspection, the source said. The inspection is headed by Lieutenant-General Musa Dzybov, head of the ministry civil defence inspection department.

The training comprised civil defence forces, rescue teams, fire brigades, police, life support units of Murmansk, special repair brigades of the Murmansk department of the Oktyabrskya railway.

The first stage of the exercise the participants fought a fire at the railway, which was caused by a "blast" of an oil-fuel tanker, as well as liquidated the aftermath of depressurisation of a tanker with liquid ammonia.

At the second stage rescue teams cleared the remains of a house "blown up" by the terrorists, saving the survivors and evacuating residents of the neighbouring houses.

At the moment only preliminary results of the exercise are clear, the final results will be drawn in the end of the week.

The Murmansk region is very special area, Dzybov stressed. It comprises over a hundred potentially dangerous installations including five posing radiation danger, 38 - chemical danger, and 33 - fire danger. That is why the ministry is paying special attention to this region.
