REBELS STRAFE INTERIOR DEPT, PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE, POLICE SQUAD IN GROZNY

KHANKALA, May 4 (AVN) - The military and political situation in the North Caucasus has not changed since Wednesday and is still complicated, a source in the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency.

In the past 24 hours the rebels have strafed an interior department in Grozny's Zavodskoy district, a military prosecutor's office in the Oktybrsky district and positions of Pskov and Moscow elite police. The Interior Ministry troops are blocking all the approaches to the city's Severny airfield.

The detachments of the unified federal group are still going on operations for search and elimination of dispersed guerrilla units in the Vedeno and Argun canyons.

Over the past 24 hours the federal artillery has been hammering rebel gatherings on the Chechen section of the Russia-Georgia border, in the Argun gorge, in the Vedeno and Nozhai-Yurt districts, in the vicinities of Tangi, Makhkety, Alkhan-Hutor and Khalkinoi, the source said.
