PACIFIC FLEET SELLS WWII TROPHY FLOATING SHIPYARD TO CHINA

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, May 5 (AVN) - The Hu Ziu-14 Chinese tow-boat arrived here on Friday to take the Gornyak floating shipyard to China, the Military News Agency learned.

The shipyard was built in Japan over 60- years ago and was given as a trophy to the USSR after WWII. Gornyak was modernised in Vladivostok and later transferred to the Kamchatka flotilla.

Gornyak conducted the docking of combat ships for undersea part complete overhaul. In addition to that the shipyard included a coating, pipeline, mechanical shops, a joinery, and an equipment mending shop.

The 120m long shipyard with 5,000t displacement employed some 200 people.

The Pacific Fleet was forced to sell Gornyak to a Chinese firm, given the absence of work for the shipyard and its outdated equipment.
