MOSCOW, May 5 (AVN) - Major-General Alexander Popov is appointed commander of the eastern federal group in Chechnya, as the Military News Agency has reported earlier Friday.
He was borne in Zhdanov, Donetsk region, on June 14 1953. During his term active duty he served as a sailor.
Popov graduated from Ryazan higher airborne command college in 1977, commanded a reconnaissance platoon, company, was airborne battalion deputy commander.
After graduation from the Frunze Military Academy in 1985 he was deputy regiment commander, division chief-of-staff, commander of the 76th airborne division.
Popov graduated from the General Staff Military Academy in 1998 and was appointed Airborne deputy commander for peacekeeping forces.
He is an Afghanistan veteran. Awarded three orders. Married, has two sons.
