LENINGRAD MILITARY PROSECUTORS TO OBSERVE OF RIGHTS, GUARANTEES OF PARTICIPANTS OF CHECHNYA CAMPAIGN

ST.PETERSBURG, May 12 (AVN) - North-western Russian military prosecutors will check into the implementation of legislation on the rights of and guarantees to the servicemen - participants of the anti-guerrilla operation in the North Caucasus by the military authorities, Lieutenant-Colonel Nikolay Kuzmin, deputy chief prosecutor of the Leningrad military district, said on Friday.

In the course of their work in the Leningrad military district and the North-western district of the Interior Ministry troops the prosecutors have exposed serious breaches in the rights of regular draft servicemen, Kuzmin told the Military News Agency.

For instance 78 servicemen of the 33rd separate operative brigade of the Interior Ministry were staying in the area of operation longer than the set period. Numerous cases of breaches in schedules of payment to servicemen participating in the hostilities have also been exposed.

Upon the decision of the Leningrad military district chief prosecutor, Major General Oleg Khlupin, the second stage of the checks will pay special attention to the realisation of social security legislation for the campaign participants and their families. The population of Russia's north-west has been informed on the matter via the media.
