DEFENCE MINISTRY COMMITTEE DISCUSSES AUTOMOBILE PROTECTION

MOSCOW, May 29 (AVN) - The automobile research and technical committee under the Defence Ministry main ordnance department held a session on Monday to discuss development of military automobiles and boosting their security, Major-General Alexander Yeliseyev, head of the committee, told the Military News Agency.

"The automobile armoured protection concept created by the main ordnance department envisages three levels of protection," Yeliseyev said. "On the first level, serial vehicles will be equipped with armour right before the combat missions. For these purpose, local systems of protection from firearms, shell splinters, mines and explosions of anti-personnel mines are being designed. These shielded elements include armoured windscreens and armoured plates," he noted.

"On the second level, specially adjusted frame and panel cabins and habitable sections will be mounted on the vehicles. The third level provides for creation of one-piece armoured capsules for habitable sections and crew compartments," he added.

The three armour levels are envisaged for tactical automobiles. In the future, basic chassis of all new military vehicles will be equipped with various armoured modules. This idea has already been put into practice by the Gorky car plant in the design of its Vodnik vehicle, he added.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Russia's leading automobile plants.
