TBILISI, June 1 (AVN) - A bomb went off in downtown Tbilisi on Thursday killing Guram Tevzadze, president of the Assistance to Army public organisation and brother of Defence Minister David Tevzadze.
The explosion occurred when Tevzadze was sitting in his car with a man and a woman, Levan Kanchadze, head of the anti-terrorist centre under the State Security Ministry, told the Military News Agency. The foreign-made vehicle was parked near the Ushba hotel, he said.
According to the data obtained by the Agency, the woman was Tevzadze's wife. She was not affected by the blast, while Tevzadze died on the spot and his companion was injured and taken to hospital.
David Tevzadze, Interior Minister Kakha Targamadze and Tbilisi police chief Soso Alavidze are currently at the site of the explosion.
The car was blown up by a bomb equivalent to 200-500g of TNT, members of the operative group investigating into the crime said. The explosive device was placed under the driver's seat, they added.
The Assistance to Army organisation received financing from the state budget to provide logistics support to the Georgian Armed Forces, the Agency learned. It has recently been involved in a series of scandals connected with theft and embezzlement of budget money.
