10TH PARATROOPS REGIMENT TO LEAVE GEORGIA BY END OF 2000

MOSCOW, June 30 (AVN) - In accordance with the Russian-Georgian agreements, the 10th separate paratroops regiment will be withdrawn from the base in Gudauty by the end of this year, a spokesman for the General Staff told the Military News Agency.

According to him part of the ordnance, armament and personnel will be taken away by rail already at the first stage, that is before August 2000.

The new place of the regiment permanent stationing will be located in Stavropol. The backup variant is the disbanded Air Force base in Belgorod.

The 10th regiment, commanded by Colonel Alexander Shukshin was formed in December 1999. It numbers 1,045 servicemen. One of the regiment's battalions is participating in the collective peacekeeping force in the zone of Georgian-Abkhazian conflict in the Gala district and two paratroops platoons in the Kodori gorge and Sukhumi. The latter is guarding the staff of the collective peacekeeping force.
