UPGRADED MSTA-S1 HOWITZER TO BE PHASED IN STARTING IN 2001

NIZHNY TAGIL, July 14 (AVN) - The current URALEXPOARMS 2000 exhibition is showing two modifications of the MSTA-S1 self-propelled howitzer, one of the Russian 152 mm calibre and the other of the NATO 155mm standard, built by Uraltransmash state unitary enterprise, Yuri Tomashov, director general of the enterprise, told the Military News Agency.

MSTA-S1 has the shortest salvo time in the world. It is equipped with the modern guidance and fire control system and survey control system that allows to hit targets effectively following the target designation.

According to Tomashov, the upgraded howitzer has a huge export potential. Although he declined to name the countries that are ready to buy it.

The system will be employed in the Russian troops only starting from 2001 in small lots. So far the whole state defence order of the enterprise is written to repair and modernisation of Akatsia and Giatsint self propelled artiller systems. It includes the order for only several mock-ups of the modernised howitzer.
