RUSSIAN-BELARUSSIAN AIR DEFENCE TRAINING ENDS SUCCESSFULLY

KALININGRAD, Western Russia, August 10 (AVN) - The first joint Russian-Belarussian air defence training completed in the Kaliningrad region on Thursday, the Military News Agency learned.

The S-300 air defence system shooting at Cape Taran marked the final stage of the training.

Five launches were made, two of them - by the Belarussian crews. Every rocket hit its air target. The training was conducted within the first stage of the Combat Commonwealth 2000, large CIS unified air defence structure manoeuvres.

The Cape Taran shooting proved that the unification of the Russian Baltic fleet and Belarus air defence in one structure is quite a real goal, Vice Admiral Vladimir Valuev, deputy Baltic Fleet commander, said summing up the results of the training. The unified structure will not only provide good results in guarding air border, but will let the two states save considerable sums, Valuev added.
