MOSCOW, August 24 (AVN) - As many as 17 federal servicemen were killed and 52 injured over the past week in Chechnya, Colonel-General Valery Manilov, first deputy chief-of-staff, told a news briefing on Thursday.
According to him, currently the guerrillas are not capable of restoring wide-scale hostilities in Chechnya. The recent election held there testified to that, he said. Irrespective of the "psychological and physical terror", 303,000 locals and over 20,00 servicemen took part in it, he added.
According to the General Staff, some 100 guerrillas, over 20 arms and ammo caches were destroyed in Chechnya in past week. Several dozens of terrorist acts were prevented. The federal command in Chechnya will continue focusing on the search and reconnaissance operations, which prove to be very effective, Manilov stressed.
