KHANKALA, August 28 (AVN) - Federal sappers exposed and rendered harmless a powerful landmine just several dozens of meters off the residence of Chechnya administration chief Akhmat Kadyrov in Gudermes, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters said on Monday.
As many as 16 federal checkpoints, outposts and other installations have come under fire in the troubled republic in the past 24 hours, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. Two federal servicemen were killed and six injured in the Dzhani-Vedeno and Bachi-Yurt villages as a result of mine explosions and shoot-outs, he said.
Meanwhile, the federals are going on with the mop-up operation in the Dzheirakh canyon on Chechnya's border with Ingushetia. Two small rebel gangs have already been eliminated in the area, the spokesman said.
