CIS GROUP ON ABKHAZIA SETTLEMENT TO MEET IN MOSCOW MONDAY

MOSCOW, August 28 (AVN) - The CIS operational group for the settlement of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict will hold a session here on Monday, a spokesmen for the Russian Defence Ministry main international military co-operation department told the Military News Agency.

The session is expected to capitalise on the reasons behind non-implementation of decisions concerning the Abkhazian settlement made at various CIS summits in the past few years, the spokesmen said. It will also work out a mechanism of their realisation, he added.

The parties are also planning to discuss the status of Russia's 50th military base in Gudauta, which Russia has proposed to transform into a peacekeepers training, maintenance and rehabilitation centre, the spokesmen went on to say. The Abkhazian leadership supported the idea at once, but Georgia has only recently given its consent for the transformation.

Russia will be represented at the session by Lieutenant-General Nikolai Zelenko, head of the international military co-operation department.
