KHANKALA, September 4 (AVN) - The federal command is expecting the guerrillas to boost their activities in Chechnya, a source in the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency.
According to the guerrilla warlords, the so-called Islam operation envisages large-scale subversive and mine activities. Over 20 trucks and cars have been already filled with explosives and are ready to be used in the operation, the source said. The guerrillas are going to use them not only in Chechnya, but also in the vicinities of Khasavyurt and Balansu of Dagestan. According to operative data, up to 200 rebels have penetrated into the area.
Federal engineers exposed and rendered harmless four heavy land mines on the roads in Grozny outskirts over the past 24 hours. The guerrillas managed to explode a mine and shot-up rails on the Naurskaya - Novoterskaya railroad harming a freight car.
In another development, the federals learned of a Chechen rebel base in the Omalo village of Georgia designed for training mercenaries from Algeria, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Pakistan, the source said. The training is headed by Pakistani and Hesbollah instructors. It is this base that recently provided five satellite phones and other communication means to the detachments of Jordanian mercenary Khattab.
