S-37 BERKUT SWEPT FORWARD FIGHTER TO MAKE SHOW FLIGHT THURSDAY

AKHTUBINSK, Atrakhan Region, September 20 (AVN) - New S-37 Berkut swept-forward experimental fighter will make a demonstrational flight at the state flight centre of the Defence Ministry here Thursday in the framework of supersonic tests programme, a source in the Sukhoi aviation industry enterprise told the Military News Agency.

S-37 Berkut made its first took-off on September 25, 1997. It was intended for testing technologies, aerodynamic and designer decisions that will be used in the fifth generation fighter. The swept-forward wing of the fighter is made more than 50 percent of composite materials. The plane is fitted with two D-30F6 type jet engines. Its took-off weight is 24t, maximum speed - over 2,200km/h. Service ceiling - 18 km.

At the time being the fighter has performed around 100 test flights.
