MINSK, September 29 (AVN) - Belarus is planning to buy a batch of Tor-M1 air defence missile systems from Russia according to the state armament programme for 2001 - 2010, Lieutenant-General Valery Kostenko, commander of the Belarussian air defence, told the Military News Agency.
So far there are no such systems in the Belarussian Armed Forces.
A group of cadets started to study the new system in the Belarussian military academy, Kostenko said. A group of specialists was recently sent to Russia to learn new radar systems, he added. The radar systems that have exhausted their resource and not up to their foreign countertypes will be replaced by new ones.
Kostenko refused to say when the new systems will be supplied to the Belarussian Armed Forces. This depends not on the military, but on financial and economic capabilities of the republic, the general stressed. "Our task is to accept the ordnance and use it properly," he added.
