ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM INFLUENCE ON THE RISE IN GEORGIA - EXPERTS

TBILISI, October 3 (AVN) - The Georgian special services have the information testifying the interest of the extremist Islamic movements towards Georgia as Russian neighbour is on the rise, Mamuka Areshidze, specialist in Caucasian affairs, told the Military New Agency.

"The trouble is Georgia is now just assembling information but no one thinks about analysing it, that could lead to hard consequences," Areshidze said. According to him, the analysis of the acquired information leads to the fact that in one of the next years the Afghan Taliban having reached the frontiers of the formed Soviet Union in the Central Asia will try to use the Georgian territory for deploying the second front of the Islamic fundamentalism there.

International efforts are needed to prevent the radical escalation of the situation there, Areshidze notes. He is sure Georgia can counteract the Islamic radicals in the region only with the help of Turkey and Russia.

It is important to take into account that the Wahhabism from Chechnya have started to make an impact upon the Muslims population of the Georgia border areas, he said. A lot of mullahs in Georgia do not have a fundamental religious education and cannot outmatch the extremist preachers in theological conversation. If the Wahhabism preachers scale up activities, this would mean the extremists would gain ground and Georgia would become a stronghold of terrorist movements, Areshidze added.
