ULYANOVSK POLICE DETACHMENT CONDUCTS 20 SPECOPS IN CHECHNYA

ULYANOVSK, Volga Region, October 17 (AVN) - The local composite police detachment has conducted over 20 special operations during its six months duty in the Chechen town of Shali, a source in the Ulyanovsk regional Interior department told the Military News Agency.

The detachment headed by Colonel Yevgeny Saushkin comprises 200 policemen. They have exposed 52 crimes only in first half of October, most of them were illegal storage of arms and drugs. Over 10 criminal cases have been initiated into the above mentioned facts and against suspected members of illegal armed formations in the past two weeks.

The policemen have extracted eight pieces of arms, over 13,500 pieces of various ammo. There are no losses among the personnel. Vyacheslav Mulyanov, an officer of the temporary Interior department was slightly wounded in an operation, but he is still in duty.

This is already the fourth mission of the Ulyanovsk policemen in Chechnya. It is to last for three months, after which the servicemen will be replaced by a detachment of the Vologda Interior department. The rotation will take place in the end of 2000.
