CHECHEN REBELS MAKE OVER 20 ATTACKS ON FEDERALS

KHANKALA, October 20 (AVN) - Chechen guerrillas made over 20 attacks on federal units and installations in Chechnya since Thursday, a source in the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency.

Military columns came under fire two, units - 14 and border outposts - seven times.

A seven-strong rebel group was exposed in the Vedeno canyon as a result of a search and reconnaissance operation on Thursday. The guerrillas declined to engage with the federals and took a run. One of them was detained. Two more rebels detected by technical reconnaissance came under artillery fire.

After a series of terrorist acts and attacks in Grozny federals boosted activities to expose members of the illegal armed formations, the source said. As many as 17 suspected rebels were detained in the past 24 hours.
