MOSCOW, December 15 (AVN) - Mine clearing unit of the RF Emergency Ministry stationed in Kosovo since mid-June of 2000 at the task of UN Mine Clearing Centre has completed its mission, a source in the ministry told the Military News Agency.
As many as 22 sappers from the Lider centre of special high rescue operations defused totally 36 mine fields with 155,000 square meters of space and 2,480 various mines.
This result is the absolute record among 16 sapper units of various world countries who participated in the UN programme of mine clearing in Kosovo in 2000, John Flenagan, UN Mine Clearing Centre head, said. Russian sappers gained their first mine clearing combat experience at the Balkans while defusing more than 2,000 explosive devices in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina back in 1999.
