GENERAL SHAMANOV LIKELY TO BECOME ULYANOVSK REGION GOVERNOR

ULYANOVSK, Volga Region, December 25 (AVN) - Lieutenant-General Vladimir Shamanov, commander of the 58th combined arms army, is leading in the gubernatorial elections in the Ulyanovsk region, a spokesman for the regional election committee told the Military News Agency on Monday.

The commission has counted 78 percent of ballots so far, the spokesman said. Shamanov is supported by 56 percent of the votes, i.e. 274,000 residents of the region. Incumbent governor Yuri Goryachev gained 23 percent of the votes,i.e. 114,000 ballots, regional legislature spokesman Sergei Ryabukhin some 12 percent, the spokesman said.

According to election committee chairwoman Lyudmila Fadeyeva, the votes yet uncounted are unlikely to change the election results dramatically.
