MOSCOW, December 26 (AVN) - The Russian Air Force Staff hosted a session of the service's military council that considered the work of the Air Force command as regards organisation of the service, enhancement of the conditions of military service and law enforcement in 2000, a staff spokesman told the Military News Agency on Tuesday.
Having listened to the report of Lieutenant-General Boris Cheltsov, Air Force chief-of-staff, the military council decided that the overall number of offences committed in the Air Force decreased by two percent compared with 1999. The number of crimes related to service transportation means decreased by almost 60 percent, while offences related to hazing decreased by 20 percent.
In the mean time, the number of crimes related to theft of weapons, ammo and explosives doubled. The year 2000 registered some 150 large-scale state and military equipment thefts and cases of embezzlement. The number of suicides in the army remains the same.
The decisions taken by the military council are aimed at increasing the degree of responsibility of the Air Force commanders. Effectiveness of their work in 2001 will be measured against the number of casualties among the servicemen on duty.
