RUSSIAN DM ANNOUNCES NEW STAGE OF CO-OPERATION WITH IRAN

TEHERAN, December 28 (AVN) - A new stage of co-operation between the Russian and Iranian Armed Forces envisages bilateral consultations on security issues and informing each other on military doctrines and army development, Russian Defence Minister Igor Sergeyev said here on Thursday.

The parties will also discuss "common threats, expansion of contacts and ties, and issues related to bilateral military exchange," Sergeyev told a news conference before leaving for Moscow. Iranian servicemen will soon begin training in Russian military educational establishments, he added.

According to the minister, Russia and Iran will resume military and technical co-operation effectively disrupted in 1995. Sergeyev said he had also discussed with Iranian military and political leaders settlement in Afghanistan, measures to strengthen security in Central Asia, in the Caucasus and in the Caspian region. The two parties agreed that intervention of alien forces into a region's domestic affairs leads to mounting tensions and affects stabilisation of the situation.

Sergeyev ended his stay in Iran by visiting the national aircraft manufacturing company in Isfahan. The facility is building an Iran-140 passenger plane with the assistance of Russian and Ukrainian specialists. Besides, Russian enterprises submit 80 percent of components for the plane.
