CHECHEN REBELS SUFFER 10 CASUALTIES FOLLOWING ARGUN GORGE SHELLING

KHANKALA, January 18 (AVN) - Chechen rebels assumed more than 10 attacks on federal positions overnight to Thursday wounding several servicemen, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus told the Military News Agency.

A search of destroyed buildings in Grozny exposed two rebel weapons caches and a sniper position. Six landmines planted on the roads were defused and 10 more were found in Chechen towns. Citizens of Grozny showed the federal troops a rebel arms cache hidden in sewage near the city's railway station. There were three assault rifles, over 1,000 ammo and eight hand grenades in it.

A scout team destroyed two dug-outs in the southern Chechen Argun gorge. Federal artillery shelled three rebel groups hiding in the gorge. According to the headquarters, the rebels suffered over 10 casualties.

Seven suspected rebels were detained in Grozny following check procedures.
